Madeira CsT – Day 03

 

Madeira szigete 741 km2-en terül el. Ez azt jelenti, hogy lényegesen kisebb, mint akármelyik magyar megye. Látnivalóból ugyanakkor nincs hiány, de nekem mindössze négy napom van arra, hogy a Funschaltól távoleső részeket is felfedezzem. A tegnapi hegyi túra után ma egy buszos útra vállalkoztam, amin a sziget nyugati felét jártuk be. Azt én sem hiszem el, hogy milyen sok helyen megfordultunk! Pontosan ez, nem pedig holmi lustaság az oka annak, hogy a mai blogbejegyzés inkább egy képes beszámolóra fog emlékeztetni. Őszintén remélem, hogy így is szórakoztató lesz!

The island of Madeira is approximately 741 km2 large (or small). This means, that it is significantly smaller than any of the Hungarian counties. (Just saying that so it’s easy to compare.) Despite it’s size, there is seemingly no end tot he attractions that can be of common interest, while I have only four days for myself to discover the areas further away from Hunchal. After last days mountain peaks tour, I’ve pre-booked a bus tour for today, to wander around the west part of Madeira. Even I, the witness of the events passed can’t believe how many places of curoisities we have visited today! This is the exact reason, and not some sort of laziness, that today’s entry will be more like a report in pictures. Nevertheless, I sincerelly hope that it will be entertaining!

Innen elsőként Camara de Lobosba mentünk, ami halászfaluból lett turista látványosság. Érkezésünkkor a helybeliek éppen egy halászfesztiválra készülődtek. A festői szépségű öblöt Sir Winston Churchill is megörökítette egy festményen, 1949-ben. Hálából a helyiek Churchillt örökítették meg, szobor formájában / From Funschal we first went to Camara de Lobos, a small fishing village, now a toursit attraction. At the time of our arrival the locals were prepring for a fishermans festival. The picturesque bay was immortalized by Sir Winston Churchill on a painting, in 1949. Out of gratitude, the village has immortalized Churchill, as a statue

A Cabo Girao különlegessége, hogy ez az 580 méter magas szikla Európa legmagasabb, a világ második legmagasabb tengerparti sziklája. A belépő a kilátóhoz 2 euroba kerül és cserébe nem látni semmit, csak tejfehér felhőket. Viszont ha az ember oldalra sandít, akkor láthatja a sziklafal sziluettjét, ha pedig lenéz a lába alatti üveglapokra, akkor megérti, hogy miért nagyon jó az, hogy az az üveg ott van / The special trait of the Cabo Girao is that this 580 meters tall cliff is the highest coastal cliff in Európe, and the second highest in the world. Adission costs 2 euros to the lookout, and in exhange you can see absulotely nothing, because the white clouds are blocking the view. However, if you are looking to the sides, you can clearly see the silhouette of the rocky coastline, and if you look at the glass tiles under your feet, you shall undestand at once, what a brilliant thing is, that they are there for you

A következő állomásunk Ribiera Brava falucska volt, ahol rövid kávészünetet tartottunk. Ez az idő elég volt arra, hogy kávézás helyett felfedezzem a 16. századi templomot, ami talán a legöregebb lehet a szigeten, illetve hogy megcsodáljam azt a magányos bástyát, ami Sao Bento, vagyis Szent Benedek erődjéből maradt. A maradékát sajnos letérkövezték, illetve fagylaltozót építettek a helyére. Az idegenvezetőnk a buszon rengeteg információval szolgált, de hagyta, hogy egyénileg fedezzük fel a látványosságokat. Ennek külön örültem / Our next stop was the admirrable village of Ribiera Brava, where we had time for a coffee break, which I used to explore the 16th century temple, which actually might be the oldest one on the island, and also the lonely remaining bastion of Fort Sao Bento (Saint Benedict). The ruins are gone now, and the rest is covered by paving stone. At least there is an ice cream bar on the top of it.... Fortunately, our guide told us a lot of interesting stuff, about local attractions, but let us explore on our own. I was more than glad about that

Nem véletlen, hogy pont a fenntarthatóságról szól majd a tanfolyam, amire érkeztem. A sziget egyfelől olyan, mint egy botanikus kert. Ma már szinte, vagy teljesen vadon növekednek a hortenziák, a kaméliák, vagy az utakat végig szegélyező szerelemvirágok (más névek afrikai vagy nílusi liliomok). Egy negyed megyényi területen annyi virág nő, mint amennyi talán egész Magyarországon nincs. Ugyanakkor jól megfigyelhető a klasszikus ökológiai problémák hatása: az invazív fajok lassan visszaszorítják az endemikus fajokat, ami különösen látványos az itt lakó élőlények korai elszigetelődése miatt. A gerinceseket a szárazföldön például eredetileg csak a gyíkok képviselték. A magashegyvidéki régiókból mér kitiltották a kecskéket, de ez már csak erősítette a problémát, mert már ezek az állatok sem tartják kordában az új növényeket. De problémát jelentenek a klímaváltozás miatt egyre gyakoribbá váló erdő- és bozóttüzek, illetve a mezőgazdálkodás és a mindenhol jellemző teraszos művelés is, ami miatt az őshonos erdők fokozatosan teret veszítenek. Harmadrészt a sziget egyre inkább megújuló energiából látja el magát. A hegyoldalakon hatalmas napelemparkokkal, míg a hegygerinceken szélerőművekkel aknázzák ki a bőséges potenciált / It's no coincidence, that my course will be about sustainability. On one hand, the whole island is just like a botanic garden. Nowdays Hyrangeas, bird of paradise flowers and african lilies are basicaly growing wild. On the surface of a quarter county there could be more flowers, than in Hungary alltogether, On the other hand, some classical ecological problems are clearly present: invasive species are slowly but surely pushing back endemic species, which is extremely apparent due to the earyl isolation of the native species. Vertebrate animals were originally represented only buy lizards. Goats were banned from the highet mountain regions, but this did not help at all, since now there are basically nothing to stop the new plants from spreading. Wildfires are more often due to climate change, and the terraced agricultural cultivation is also regressing the size of the natural forests. On the third thought, renewable energy is plentiful, and it's used in a growing tendency. There are some mountain sides, covered in solar power plants, and than again, some mountain ridges are providing home to wind farms. 

Hegyi babér- és eukaliptusz erdőkön keresztül jutottunk el arra a kies fennsíkra, aminek a közepén az itteni tartózkodásom egyik fő oka, a Fanal-erdő található. (A másik fő ok majd holnap következik.) Ezek a szélcsavarta fák átlagosan 600 évesek. Maga a hely különösen akkor kelt misztikus hatást, amikor a felhők lentebb ereszkednek. Ennek most sajnos csak részben voltunk tanúi. / Through mountain forests of laurels and eucalyptus we have reached the barren plateu, where in the middle, the Fanal Forest resides. This place is one of the main reasons, why I am actually here. (The second main reason comes tomorrow.) The trees twisted by the wind are about 600 hundred years old. When the clouds descend low, the place has a mystical atmosphere, which we could admire only partially. 

Egy rövid megálló, csak a táj kedvéért / A short stop to enjoy the view

A forróság és a kellő mennyiségű séta miatt lassan ideje volt egy kis hűsölésnek. Erre alkalmasabb helyet nem lehetett volna találni Porto Moniz természetes vulkanikus medencéinél. Az itteni strandot mind a CNN, mind pedig a BBC első helyre tette a legjobb tengerparti strandok listáján, miközben a belépő ára csupán 3 euró volt, ami a hazai árakhoz képest kimondottan kedvező / Suffering from the heat, and after walking a decent distance, it was time to refresh myself. And there couldn't have been a better place for that, than the natural, volcanic pools of Porto Moniz. This bathing complex was ranked on the first place on both CNN's and BBC's top 10 tier lists of seasid pools, while the ticket only cost 3 euros, which is generous, compared to the prices at home

Innen már csak rövidebb megállók következtek. Először a Menyasszony Fátyla-vízesést néztük meg, majd még néhány kevésbé híreset / From here on only short stops followed. First we have admired the Brides  Veil waterfall, and some less well-known ones

Sao Vicente egy különlegesen szép falu, amit a völgy két bejáratától eltekintve minden irányból meredek sziklafalak vesznek körül. Fentről már csak egy "Madeira" felirat hiányzik, Times New Hollywood stílusban / Sao Vicente is a lovely village in a valley, that is almost completely surrounded by steep walls of rock. The only thing missing is a huge Madeira sign from above, written in font Times New Hollywood
