Végre ténylegesen elkezdődött a tanfolyam. Az első benyomásaim összességében pozitívak. Az oktatónk, Sérgio, geográfus és geofizikus, a Lisszaboni Egyetem kutatója, aki a Madeira vízgazdálkodásáért felelős cég vezetője is volt, és egyébként jól beszél angolul, beleértve a szakmai nyelvet is. A mai előadása során hat prezentációt vetített le nekünk, amikhez igényes tudományossággal előadott mondanivaló társult. A színvonal inkább egyetemi, mint középiskolai. Szerencsére ismerős számomra a téma, így nem is elsődlegesen az új információk, bár persze olyanok is voltak, hanem a szakmai idegennyelv használata és gyakorlása a fő hozomány a számomra. Az előadások során a résztvevők is kötetlenül hozzászólhattak a témához, így az angolnyelvű beszéd gyakorlására is volt lehetőségünk. A mai napon elsősorban a fenntarthatóság fogalmáról, eszmeiségéről, történetiségéről volt szó, majd egyes konkrét környezeti problémákról, illetve a fenntarthatóság 17 alapelvéről és gyakorlati példáiról. A második előadáson Madeira geológiája, éghajlata, növénytana, földrajza voltak a fő témák, illetve Sérgio ezen témák mentén mutatott be kapcsolódási pontokat a globális környezeti kihívásokhoz (pl. szaharai eredetű porviharok, gyakori bozóttüzek, invazív fajok terjedése és az általuk okozott problémák, az erdőirtás következtében fellépő talajpusztulás, gyakori csuszamlások és áradások).
Finally, the course has really started! My first impression is positive in general. Our instructor, Sérgio, is a geographer and a geophysicist, who works as a researcher at the University of Lisbon, and was also the director of the public company responsible for Madeira's water management. He also speaks English well, including the professional jargon. During todays lectures, he has shown as six presentation, supported by scientifically solid background. The level is rather that what you would expect at a university. Furtunatelly I'm familiar with the topics presented, but I'm not here manily for knew informations, altough it's welcome, but for learning and practically speak English related to my subjects. The lectures are very open, so everyone has a chance to debate, argue, supplement or review the topic at hand. Today was mainly about sustainability and it's concept, it's ideas and history, and later on about concrete ecological problems, and also about the seventeen criteria of sustainability supported by practical examples. The second part of the class was manily about Madeira, and it's geology, climta, flora, geography. Sérgio also cited some connecting points between Madeira and global problems becoming local, like dust storms from the Sahara, wildfires, invasive species and the trouble they cause, and about deforestation and landslides, soil erosion and flods caused by it.

Az előadást követően a szervező, Joao "meglepett bennünket" egy programmal. A csoport többi tagjával belépőt kaptunk egy katamarános delfin- és bálnalesre. Azt eredetileg tudtuk, hogy a tanfolyam díján valamilyen - önköltségen, és nem az ösztöndíj terhére - valamilyen plusz aktivitási programért is fizettünk, de azt csak rövid ideje tudtuk meg, hogy ez egy bálnales lesz. A helyzet az, hogy én mér körülbelül 1,5 hónapja lefoglaltam egy bálnalest a holnapi napra, de ha már ezt is kifizettük, akkor Petával úgy döntöttünk, hogy élünk a lehetőséggel, és kétszer megyünk. A program átszervezésével ez még éppen megoldható.
After classes, the organising manager of the host had a "surprise program" for us. With the other members of the group, we got a voucher for a dolphin- and whale-watching catamaran tour. Back than, when we have applied to the course, we knew, that there will be some added activity programs, but it was only discussed a few weeks agot, what programs exatly. The thing is, that I have allready pre-booked the same tour for us for tomorrow, but with the little rearrangement of the tight schedulel we can take both ships, one today, and one tomorrow. Since we have payed for both, we have decided with Peta, that this will be for the best.
A középső katamaránnal hajókáztunk bő három órát az Atlanti-óceánon. Az idő jó volt, a hőség elmúlt és végre a hőmérséklet is az előzetesen ígért tartományon belül esett. A mai órákon hallottam ezzel kapcsolatban egy jó idézetet: "Az éghajlat az, amire számítasz. Az időjárás az, amit kapsz." Akinek egy kis köze van a földrajzhoz, az érti a megállapítás nagyszerűségét / We have sailed out to the Atlantic Ocean on the catamaran in the middle. Weather was finally good, the heat was gone, and the forecast was finally precise about the temperature expected. On todays classes, I've heard a great quote: "The climate is what you expect. The weather is what you end up with." If someone has any affinity in geography, than surely understands the greatness in these lines
Összesen egyetlen palackorrú delfincsaládot láttunk, de nekik is nagyon örültünk. A helyi állatvédelmi szabályok értelmében egy hajó utasai legfeljebb tíz percig figyelhetik őket, és egyszerre legfeljebb két hajó tartózkodhat a közelükben, hogy az emberek ne zavarják őket túlságosan / We have only seen a single family of bottlenose dolphins, but we were very happy about that occuring. The crowd on a boat can admire them for a maximum of ten minutes, and also only two boats can be present only at the same time, in order not to harbor these protected sea mammals. Such are the local regulations
Mivel viszonylag kevés tengeri emlőssel találkoztunk, ezért parancsba adtam a kapitánynak, hogy üldözze ezt a kalózhajót, hogy ezzel üssük el az időt / Since we have only seen a few doplhins, I have orded the captain of the vessel to chase the pirate ship ahed, so time will pass with more fun

Partraszállás után megálltunk Cristiano Rolando szobránál, de a CR7 Múzeumot már zárva találtuk / After boarding off the ship, we have walked to the statue of Cristiano Ronaldo. The museum was allready closed
A koraesti órákban megnéztünk egy újabb nyílt botanikus parkot, a Parque de Santa Catarinát. A part felől, a függőkert lépcsőin keresztül érkeztünk meg a földi paradicsom eme apró kis darabkájába, majd felkerestük a képzésünk helyszíne előtt található Sissi szobrot. Wittelsbach Erzsébet, Ferenc József felesége 1860-ban látogatta meg Madeirát / Still early in the evening we have visited another botanical park, free to visit, the Parque de Santa Catatina. We have approached form the direction of the caost, and took the stairs of the hanging garden to reach this small peace of earthly paradise. After that we have visited the statie of Sissi. Elizabeth of House Wittelsbah, the wife and queen consort of Franz Joseph visited Madeira in 1860
